Position Overview

The primary role of the Senior Habilitation Specialist (Sr. HS) is to provide direct instruction to the Community Based Pre-Vocational program, Custodial and Clerical Vocational Training programs. The Sr. HS will work alongside the people we support in order to help them achieve their Personal Outcomes as well as discover and achieve professional goals. This includes adhering to a provided curriculum to teach, evaluate and observe progress, provide outreach and coordination of volunteer opportunities for participants, supporting their health and safety, implementing all aspects of the activity schedule, participating in the annual and semi-annual review process, development and implementation of individual’s goals/services, and advocating for the needs of individuals.  The Sr. HS is also responsible for providing supervision, assessment of individuals, and support to the Vocational Habilitation Specialist(s) (HS).

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions  

  • Follow curriculum provided to teach and evaluate the people we support in completing OPWDD Vocational Programs for clerical and/or custodial skills
  • Oversee Community Based Pre-Vocational program, assigned staff, and enrolled participants
  • Identify community sites for pre-vocational services to be performed
  • Complete daily and monthly documentation for pre-vocational and vocational training track programs
  • Assess and evaluate people we support to gauge knowledge, interest and aptitude of vocational disciplines
  • Work in partnership with the people we support to ensure that their rights, health, safety and personal outcomes are being supported and promoted at all times
  • Work with the people we support and other members of the interdisciplinary team to develop service plans that aid the person in achieving their personal life goals
  • Work with the people we support to help them identify and realize both their personal and professional goals
  • Work with the people we support to teach them and assist them with developing new vocational skills
  • Advocate with the people we support in a variety of situations
  • Assist the people we support to overcome barriers and challenges to establish and maintain a network of relationships and valued social roles
  • Assist in training and orientation of team members and/or floating staff including training and providing information as required regarding ADL skills training and development, behavior treatment plans and strategies, socialization needs of the individuals, recreation, and the utilization of community resources - complete 1st Day, Week, Month packet
  • Supervise, evaluate and observe assigned team members
  • Research and perform outreach to locations and vendors in community for volunteering opportunities
  • Ensure that active programming or structured activity is provided at all times and that individuals are encouraged to participate
  • Prevent, recognize and report abuse toward the people we support
  • Ensure that all required documentation is completed /processed appropriately and in a timely manner

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Always communicate in a respectful manner with all people including the people we support, supervisors, other valued team members, and members of the community
  • Coordinate, support, attend and participate in all required events/meetings/reviews/committees
  • Promote and support community involvement for the people we support
  • Provide positive behavior support to the people we support as necessary
  • Assist with validating services
  • Assist with scheduling and tracking of Community Integration and Volunteering Opportunities
  • Provide transportation to and from program sites as needed
  • Provide support with the billing process
  • Complete all required trainings and stay in compliance
  • Maintain the confidentiality of any information relating to individuals and employees of the organization
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in related field required
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Clerical and/or custodial experience preferred
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License and satisfy criteria to be a driver for FREE
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with flexibility, keeping others informed and anticipating needs is essential
  • Must be efficient, well organized, and have excellent communication skills
  • Proficient writing skills with grasp of basic grammar and spelling
