Overview

Under the supervision of the Community Habilitation Supervisor, the Community Habilitation Specialist is responsible for assisting individuals to become more independent when performing activities of daily living in order to achieve their valued outcomes. Habilitation services are designed to develop skills to increase an individual’s level of independence. Habilitation services may include training, supervision or assistance related to communication skills, interpersonal skills, socialization, mobility, community transportation skills, problem solving skills, money management, safety, cooking and other skills needed to reach their valued outcomes. Services are primarily community based and revolve around volunteer and recreational opportunities.

Responsibilities

Opportunities available in Suffolk/Nassau

Part-time:  Days/Evenings ... Weekday/Weekend

  • Become certified in CPR/FA/SCIP.
  • Work independently and multi-task.
  • Leadership skills such as a self-started, taking initiative, positive role model.
  • Effective communication skills, writing skills, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to understand directives and apply them in a variety of situations.
  • Ability and willingness to support individuals of varied intellectual disabilities as well as varied behavioral challenges.
  • Assist individuals to become more independent when performing activities of daily living in order to achieve their valued outcomes.
  • Training & educating the individuals on communication skills, problem solving skills, money management, safety, etc.

 

 

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a High School Diploma
  • At least 1 year experience working with individuals with a Developmental Disability. (Associates Degree with 3 years of similar experience preferred)
  • Ability to provide services independently in the community.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and organizational skills
  • Must have a flexible schedule
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License a must
