Under the supervision of the Program Supervisor, the Peer Support Specialist is responsible for mentoring individuals diagnosed with mental illness to develop personal and meaningful independent living goals that will help fully integrate them into their local communities. The Peer Support Specialists will assist these individuals in developing the skills to better manage their psychiatric symptoms, maintain stability, and move forward in recovery. The MRST Peer Support Specialist provides training and supports in independent living skills, including how to be responsible tenants and maintain psychiatric stability.
Peer Support Specialists will also support individuals receiving services in transitioning from one setting to another (“bridging”). As such, they must be able to utilize experiential knowledge of mental health and mental health services to serve as role models and coach others to enhance their self-confidence, self-responsibility, personal growth, and independence.
◦Make visits to assigned individuals.
◦Participates with the individual in the development, evaluation, and modification of individual’s service plans.
◦Responsible for completing all required documentation in a timely manner.
◦Assists individuals in improving socialization skills.
◦Assists individuals in improving symptom management skills.
◦Provides crisis management and case management services. (Includes making collateral contacts.)
◦Notifies the appropriate supervisory personnel of any medical, psychiatric, or programmatic emergency.
◦Provides transportation as needed, for shopping, medical appointments, etc.
◦Attends staff meeting, supervision and other agency meetings.
◦Attends work related workshops/conference as progra schedule permits.
◦Trains and assists new apartment staff in their day to day job responsibilities.
◦Relays individual and/ or program specific information to appropriate agency personnel.
◦Learns and adheres to all agency policies and procedures on agency personnel.
◦Accepts and follows through on other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
